Mechanical Construction: Plumbing & Piping Systems Services
The Industrial Facility Project
The Hillen Pumping Station project consisted of the complete renovation and upgrade of the pumping station and transmission main for the City of Baltimore potable water supply. Included in the new construction was a Pumping Station Building and Electrical Substation. A renovation of the surge tank vault was completed with the addition of a mechanical room.
Poole & Kent Mechanical Contractor Role
Poole and Kent served dual roles on this project as both the general contractor and mechanical contractor. The construction scope of work included the installation of the following plumbing and piping equipment/systems: 2,000 LF of Electric Ductbank, (3) 30 MGD, 1,000 HP pumps and motors, (2) 20 MGD, 700 HP pumps and motors, overhead crane system in the pump station, 4.2 kV MCC and 480 V MCC, rebuilding of 1250 HP motor and 10 MGD pumps, complete hydropneumatic system to operate cone valves, automated instrumentation and control system, (2) pneumatically controlled 17,000 gallon surge tanks, and 3,850 ft. of PCPP water pipe in sizes ranging from 36" to 66".
Challenges/ Achievements/ Goals
The operation of the Hillen Pumping Station is vital to the output of the City's water supply. Insofar as the plant had to maintain operations, Poole and Kent had to perform all work under the constraints of working around two operational water filtration plants and water supply lines.
Through careful coordination and planning, the Hillen Pumping Station project was completed earlier than the original schedule dictated.
