Complete Mechanical System Installation Services
The Transportation Facility Project
As a result of BWI’s extraordinary growth, the Maryland Aviation Administration sought additional gate space to accommodate the expansion of Southwest Airlines. A new improved Concourse A
opened early in 2005, adding 26 new gates and formally establishing a HUB for Southwest Airlines at BWI airport. The new A/B concourse includes a baggage claim area, passenger hold
rooms, ticket counter space and several new food and shopping areas.
Poole & Kent Mechanical Contractor Role
As the mechanical contractor, Poole and Kent was responsible for the installation of the complete mechanical package for this project including: plumbing, HVAC, duct work, mechanical insulation, building automation systems (BAS) and snow melt systems. Additionally, Poole and Kent implemented the tie-in into the existing central utility plant for Chilled Water and High Temperature Hot Water.
Challenges / Achievements / Goals
To minimize costs and shorten the project’s duration, Poole and Kent proposed an alternate route through the existing structure to reroute 3,000 linear feet of utility piping, revised interface
locations, and made recommendations for alternative materials of construction. Poole and Kent’s project team was able to assess early in the RFI process that the underground Sanitary and
Storm Water Piping did not comply with code. Our project team worked collectively with the Engineer and Inspectors to develop an acceptable system with minimal financial impact to the
client.
