NTT Communications (Verio) Data Center, Sterling, Virginia
The Project
Verio, a data communications provider, sought to build a new facility that would enhance their 24/7 support operation. The Verio Data Center is a 88,000 SF data center housing over 60,000 sf generating 150 BTU’s per square foot.
Poole & Kent Role
As the mechanical contractor, Poole and Kent installed the mechanical systems including (4) 500 ton chillers with Plus One Redundancy (Full occupancy rating), (4) 500 ton cooling towers with Plus One Redundancy (full occupancy rating), (2) outside air handling units, (9) corridor air handling units, (80) data air computer systems, and an 84,000-gallon fuel oil system. Poole and Kent also provided design assistance on all mechanical and BAS Systems.
Challenges / Achievements / Goals
Poole and Kent helped to ensure the successful completion of the project by taking the coordination lead and actively pursuing the most competitive final completion costs for the Owner. All mechanical systems were re-designed in-house from the original contract documents. This was achieved with the concurrence of the Engineer and Owner and Poole and Kent’s continuous monitoring of the critical and aggressive time frame that the construction project entailed. The re-design philosophy focused on system performance as well as system redundancy for this state-of-the-art data center, where 24/7 sustainability is critical.
